Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection can be considered a disability under the social security disability listing 14.08 (www.ssa.gov). HIV infects important cells in the human immune system. As HIV weakens and kills these cells, the body becomes more susceptible to infection. HIV can cause acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) as well as other illnesses such as pneumonia, which can be deadly due to the weakened state of the body’s immune system. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention website, the HIV infection rate in America is higher than ever before (www.cdc.gov). Millions of people around the world are diagnosed with HIV each year.

Just over 21 years ago, Earvin “Magic” Johnson, a professional basketball player, came out to the world about his HIV diagnosis. He said “…it can happen to anybody, even me…” Johnson has survived HIV thanks to modern medicine and the treatments it has provided. He is now an active spokesperson for both HIV and AIDS. While HIV is a life-long struggle, it can be overcome with the help of modern medicine.
