The Federal budget for the fiscal year 2015 has allowed Tallahassee’s social security field office and other similar offices around the country to restore some service hours. As hard as it may be to get in touch with your local field office, you now have an extra hour to get a hold of someone on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Beginning March 16, 2015, social security field offices nationwide will be open to the public from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., as opposed to the usual 3:00 PM closing time that has been in effect for several years. On Wednesdays, field offices will still close at 12:00 p.m. in order to reduce backlogs.

Carolyn Colvin, Acting Commissioner of the Social Security Administration, has noted that “the public expects and deserves world-class customer service,” which is what this expansion of hours aims to provide. In the past, budget cuts had forced the offices to reduce hours and staffing, but the new commitment of resources for the fiscal year 2015 hope to correct some of these old issues. In addition to the local field offices, the toll-free Social Security number (1-800-772-1213) offers assistance Monday thru Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. There is also still the option to visit www.socialsecurity.gov to complete online applications and appeals for disability, retirement, and Medicare, replace a Medicare card, or report address or telephone number changes at any time.
