At times, the processes to claim Social Security Disability Insurance or Supplemental Security Income can be lengthy. In certain cases an individual’s claim may require more immediate attention based on the severity of their disability. Compassionate Allowances are a way that Social Security can quickly identify those applicants whose conditions clearly meet disability standards.

As of December 1, 2012 there are over 100 conditions that are eligible for Compassionate Allowances. The conditions include various kinds of cancers, diseases and syndromes, as well as other illnesses. For a full list of Compassionate Allowances Conditions, go to www.ssa.gov/compassionateallowances.

Individuals with eligible conditions are considered for allowances based on general medical information that can be obtained quicker than in general claims for disability benefits. The Compassionate Allowances initiative enables Social Security to give priority to applicants with obviously disabling conditions, working to get benefits to qualifying applicants as quickly as possible.
